Selective Mutism

by Claire, 13

I’ve had selective mutism all my life. It’s when you physically cannot speak in certain situations and just remain silent.

Most people just think you are shy and don’t realise you have an illness. It’s a constant battle that gets worse and worse everyday. It’s caused by extreme anxiety.

I hate it when a teacher asks me a question but all I can do is stare and not speak. Everyone knows me as the 'shy girl' or the girl 'that doesn’t speak'.

It’s horrible. It’s like everyday waking up to your worst fear – speaking. I can speak perfectly fluently at home – it’s only at school and other social situations.
