A brilliant smile from braces

by Amy-lu, 14

Well the problems with my teeth started around the age of seven when the last of my baby teeth came out. My teeth started growing really wonky and I found it hard to keep my mouth open.

I also needed quite a few fillings back then. But at the age of nine I was told I would have to be referred for specialist treatment. I was meant to have it done at the local hospital in Exeter, but there was a three-year waiting list. I needed treatment sooner though, so a few months later my first visit to the orthodontist came.

Feeling scared

I remember being really scared but I was taken to the x-ray room and had a round-the-head scan. I was then taken to see my orthodontist who said I needed to wait a year and come back. I also saw my x-ray which showed one tooth was stuck behind another tooth and the gum. I was also told I needed four teeth out, and that was that! Now fast forward a year to my second visit. This time I was told I had to have braces for 15 months.

A few weeks later my first tooth extraction came. I had it done at the dentist at only ten years old, and it still haunts me. I was given the injection in my mouth – well I had four, which didn't half hurt, and had two teeth removed. Then about a week later I had the same again – only my jaw got dislocated (I can still dislocate it).

Train tracks

Then about two weeks after my 11th birthday I had the braces fitted and I had train tracks. They were uncomfortable at first but I got used to them in a flash. For about 15 months I was constantly at the orthodontists, I only broke the brace three times, which is quite good I think. Having them taken off hurt, but that was a quick affair. I had to go back later that day and have my retainers fitted, but that was easy, then about six more visits and that was it – I haven't been since.

Braces make better teeth

Braces changed my life for the better so if you are having braces don’t worry! The end result is always worth the pain. And I don't have any regrets apart from my jaw – but at least I don't look like Bugs Bunny!
