My nephew’s serious accident

by Abi, 12

Three weeks ago I had the worst weekend of my life. I got a phone call from my sister saying that my nephew had fallen out of an 8ft tree and landed on his head. He was drifting in and out of consciousness and when in hospital had to be resuscitated.

I didn't know how to cope – we were more like brother and sister. He was transferred from our local hospital to Kings College in London, a specialist hospital in neurology (brains and spines). Here he had a bolt put through his skull and a drain put on his brain.

He was in ICU [intensive care unit] then moved down to HDU [high dependency unit] then eventually placed on a ward, where I went to visit him.

He had 80 stitches all in all. He is now recovering successfully and I would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and surgeons that helped my family with this.

When I first got the news I almost passed out and my mum had to sit me down, I then began to hyperventilate. However I realised that crying wouldn’t make him better and that I had to be strong for him. So if I have any advice to others in difficult times it’s just to stay strong and be optimistic.
